Doulas vs. Midwives: What’s the Difference—and Which Do You Need?

Pregnancy opens the door to a world of new experiences—and new decisions. One of the biggest? Choosing your birth team. As you explore your options, you might come across two terms that seem similar, but actually represent very different roles: doulas and midwives.

Both are powerful supporters of birth and postpartum wellness, but they serve different purposes—and understanding the distinction can help you create the experience that’s best for you and your baby. Let’s break it down.

What Is a Midwife?

A midwife is a licensed healthcare professional who is trained to provide medical care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Midwives can perform:

  • Prenatal checkups

  • Lab work and screenings

  • Monitoring of baby’s growth and development

  • Managing labor and delivery

  • Emergency interventions when needed

  • Postpartum recovery support

Midwives are often seen as the “middle ground” between traditional OB-GYN care and holistic birth approaches. Many practice in birth centers, home settings, or even hospitals, depending on your needs.

At WildMoon, midwifery means deeply attuned, woman-centered care. It means listening to your body, honoring your choices, and offering clinical expertise in a grounded, soulful way.

What Is a Doula?

A doula is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support, but not medical care. Think of a doula as your birth companion or guide.

Doulas offer:

  • Prenatal emotional support and education

  • Hands-on comfort during labor (massage, positioning, breathwork)

  • Advocacy and reassurance

  • Partner support and coaching

  • Postpartum emotional and practical care (feeding, rest, newborn tips)

Doulas are there to nurture you—your emotional wellbeing, your voice, and your vision for your birth. While they don’t catch babies or do clinical checks, they’re deeply involved in holding the space for your journey.

Can I Have Both?

Yes—and it’s a powerful combination.

  • Midwife = Medical Caregiver

  • Doula = Supportive Companion

Together, they form a sacred team that surrounds you with skill, compassion, and continuous presence. Many birthing families choose to have both—a midwife for the health and safety of the birth, and a doula for added comfort, advocacy, and support.

At WildMoon, we often collaborate with incredible doulas who align with our values. If you’re interested in both, we’re happy to help you explore the best fit for your journey.

So, Which One Do I Need?

Ask yourself:

  • Do I want someone to monitor my pregnancy and attend my birth in a medical capacity? → You need a midwife.

  • Do I want extra emotional and physical support during labor and postpartum? → You’ll love a doula.

  • Do I want both holistic care and hands-on nurturing? → Consider hiring both.

The WildMoon Way

We believe birth is sacred. Whether you choose a midwife, a doula, or both, our goal is always the same: to empower you, support your choices, and create a space where your birth unfolds with peace, presence, and power.
